It still proposes c:\program files (x86) as the default installation folder. I
have manually deleted the HKCU\Software\nasm registry key.

Did you already commit the changes? Because I couldn't find them in the repo
at:
http://repo.or.cz/nasm.git/blob_plain/HEAD:/nsis/nasm.nsi

You may also want to use the latest version of NSIS 3.0 (instead of 2.5) to
build the setup.
