And yes, it is extremely frustrating that keeping compatibility with multiple
versions of autoconf is such a pain, bordering on impossible. The autotools
maintainers treat them as developer's side tools, and the FSF tend to check in
the compiled configure scripts into their version control systems.
Unfortunately it causes a *lot* of noise and doesn't really solve the problem
since as soon as any of the files are touched it breaks.

This is why we have opted for daily snapshot builds (which include all
generated files) over checking in those files.
